The EU is Mercosur's number one trade and investment partner. EU exports to Mercosur were €41bn in goods in 2019 and €21bn in services in 2018. These texts are without prejudice to the final outcome of the agreement between the EU and Mercosur. The texts will be final upon signature. The agreement will become binding on the Parties under international law only after completion by each Party of its internal legal procedures necessary for the entry into force of the Agreement (or its provisional application).

In 2019, the Mercosur had generated a nominal gross domestic product (GDP) of around 4.6 trillion US dollars, placing the bloc as the 5th economy of the world. The bloc places high on the human development index. It has signed free trade agreements with Israel, Egypt, Japan and the European Union, among others.
